New Year’s Is Right Around the Corner….

Can you believe it’s already going to be 2013?!

Since we all survived the end of the Mayan Calendar it’s time to start planning our New Year!!

A new year symbolizes new beginnings but a New Year’s party symbolizes good old fashion fun.  Here are some great party ideas…

Have a theme party and get creative!

  • Have everyone come to your party wearing a certain color, all black, all white, all red.  You decide!
  • Ever been to an ugly sweater party at Christmas time?  Use that same idea but switch it up, have everyone come in the most hideous PROM wear!  It still counts as formal wear…..right?!?
  • Throw a sports themed party and have all of your guests wear their favorite team jersey!
  • Have a pajama party!  Slippers, jammies, at least if your guests have a little too much to drink they can sleep off their buzz comfortably on your couch or floor.
  • Each year comes with many trends in fashion and not all of them are good ones so have your guests come wearing their most despised fashion trend!
  • Casino Night can also be a lot of fun!
  • There are so many posibilites!

Have a RESOLUTION BOARD:

As your guests enter the party have them write their New Year’s Resolution on a chalk board you have set up near the door.

Once all of your guests have arrived have all of the resolutions on the board written down on individual pieces of paper placed in a hat or a bowl.

All of your attendees will then get to draw a resolution from the bowl and share some laughs as you take turns guessing which resolution goes to which guest!

Decorating is essential:

You don’t have to go all out to decorate, keep it simple.

Balloons are a great way to decorate an they are also inexpensive.

Instead of using weights to tie your balloons down, just let them float to the ceiling to roam freely throughout the room.

Make sure all of the string lengths are staggered so it doesn’t look odd having them all one length.

New years cookies

Your snacks can also bring something to the table to add to your decorating.  (See what I did there…not bad, eh?)

Using a few rolls of pre made sugar cookie dough and some inexpensive cookie cutters you can create a variety of fun cookies to put out.

Champagne glasses, clocks, numbers, you name it!

Metallic or glittery Christmas ornaments in a large bowl or vase make a great centerpiece.  You can also hang them from the ceiling or a light fixture above the table.

Everyone will need a drink to ring in the New Year so use numbered drink ware to add to the fun.

Have great music:

Having your 5 disc CD changer on rotation is a thing of the past.  Plug in your mp3 player, or pull up your play list on your computer to play great songs that will keep your guests dancing into the countdown.

If you’re throwing a theme party, let’s say a 70′s party for example, make sure your music fits the theme and have plenty of disco on hand!

Let the countdown begin….

Always make sure that safety is a top priority.  What do we have without our friends and family?

Whatever your New Year brings TailGatorz.com wishes you all the best!!

Here’s to another year!  Happy 2013!

Tailgating Essentials

Preparing for a big day of tailgating  can sometimes be a daunting task.  The list of things you will need is constantly being added to in your head.  A great idea for getting ready with ease is to type out a list of tailgating essentials on your computer, have it laminated and then it can be used over and over again.  Check off each item on your list using a dry erase marker, these will wipe off of your laminated sheet easily once it’s complete.  If creating your own list is giving you anxiety, don’t worry there are many websites that have downloadable tailgating checklists already prepared.

Create Your Own Man Cave

Every man should have his own space to watch the game if he isn’t out tailgating at it.

Here are the Top 10 Tips for creating the perfect Man Cave:

  1. Walk through the area and try to visualize exactly how you want it to look, taking into consideration the functionality of the space.
  2. Find your inspiration.  If you have a framed autographed jersey for example, you may want to use this as the inspiration for the colors and theme of your space.
  3. Work out your plan on paper.  Take measurements of the area and transfer that to a piece of graph paper.  The more details you have planned out on paper will make applying it to the space all that much easier.
  4. Make a list of materials that you will need to complete your build.  If you are working within a budget, a good rule of thumb is to leave yourself a 10-15% allowance for unforeseen costs.  You will never know what you forgot on your list of materials until you need it!
  5. Make a list of the tools you will need.  Whatever you don’t already have can be rented from your local home improvement store.
  6. Hire a licensed contractor if needed.  If your project will require electrical, plumbing or HVAC work that you are not comfortable with it is always best to hire a licensed contractor to do the work for you.  Just be sure that when hiring a contractor you get a few different quotes and get them signed specifying the work to be done.
  7. Have a battle plan.  Before you get started on your build make a step by step game plan for yourself of the work to be done.  This will come in handy not only for you but also for any contractors that may need to be scheduled.
  8. Recruit some extra hands.  Having friends and family with some general building skills come help will aid you in your plan of attack.
  9. Use your battle plan to set goals for accomplishing each task.  Giving yourself a time frame to finish each step will help you to complete your build.
  10. Once the building portion is complete it’s time to get busy furnishing your Man Cave.  Hang the jersey you originally used for your inspiration along with any other sports memorabilia.  Get creative, maybe sports aren’t your thing but classic cars are…it’s YOUR space to do what YOU want!

We Won Whoopie Pies

There is always a lot of focus on the main dishes and appetizers on game day but what about the desserts?  Here is a great game day dessert that is easy to make and tastes great!

We Won Whoopie Pies

Football Whoopie Pies!

You will need:

1 cup powdered sugar, sifted

1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

1 7-ounce jar of marshmallow creme

1 box of chocolate cake mix ( water, vegetable oil and eggs called for on cake mix box )

mini egg shaped baking tray or silicone baking mold

Directions:

  1. For Filling, using an electric mixer beat powdered sugar and unsalted butter in a large bowl until fluffy (about 2 minutes), add marshmallow creme; beat until blended and smooth.  DO AHEAD Can be made 2 hours ahead. Let stand at room temperature.
  2. For Football Cakes, prepare cake batter per directions on the box; cover and chill for 1 hour.
  3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees, spray your egg shaped pan with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  4. Fill the egg molds to just below the lip and smooth out the batter the best you can.  Let stand for 10 minutes.
  5. Bake cakes until test toothpick comes out clean, this should be around 15-18 minutes.  When the cakes are done baking, let cool.
  6. Once cakes have cooled gently release from the egg molds.
  7. To Fill, cut each cake in half brushing off any loose crumbs.
  8. Put a large dollop of your filling on one cake half then place the other half on top, gently push down.  Don’t worry if the filling starts to come out of the sides, you can clean it up later with a butter knife to make it look pretty.
  9. To Line the Laces, you can pipe the laces on to the tops of your footballs with a pastry bag using a small round tip.  If you do not have a pastry bag you can also do this using a plastic sandwich bag.  Fill the sandwich bag with some of your filling then using a pair of scissors, cut a very small hole in the corner of the bag for piping.  Be careful not to cut too large of a hole because this will determine the thickness of your laces.

Tailgating Facts

We all know that there are some common threads to tailgating but did you know….

The majority of tailgaters are between 25 and 44.

College students aren’t the ones packing parking lots before football games. Most tailgaters are older, between their mid-twenties and mid-forties. Only 4% of tailgaters are between 12 and 20, and just 9% are over 55, while a whopping 60% are between 25 and 44.

Most tailgaters are men.

While many women enjoy tailgating, the stats show that it is largely a male pastime. A survey found that 79% percent of tailgaters are men, making women a serious minority in stadium parking lots.

The average tailgater spends more than $500 per year on food for tailgating.

Tailgating is a great time, but it isn’t always cheap. On average, tailgaters spend in excess of $500 a year on food, not counting booze. With the average tailgater attending six to 10 parties a season, paying for tickets, and traveling to the event, things can get pretty expensive.

30% of tailgaters don’t even attend the game.

Homer Simpson once said, “We’re not here for the game. The game is nothing. The game is crap. The game makes me sick. The real reason we Americans put up with sports is for this: Behold, the tailgate party. The pinnacle of human achievement.” It seems that many tailgaters agree with him, with a whopping 30% attending tailgating alone, never entering the stadium.

95% of tailgaters prepare their food at the stadium.

Tailgaters aren’t about to eat just anything. Few prepare food ahead of time or bring fast food. Instead, the majority grill, smoke, or fry foods right on site, with many using specialized tailgating gear.

More and more schools are aiming to make tailgating green.

Last year, more than 75 schools participated in Game Day Challenge, an initiative started by the EPA. The schools effectively kept 500,000 pounds of waste out of landfills by designing waste reduction plans and promoting recycling at tailgating and stadium events.

Many fans watch the game from the parking lot with the help of modern technologies.

Why sit in uncomfortable bleachers and pay for a ticket when you can catch the game right in your car while tailgating? A growing number of tailgaters are taking advantage of technologies that let them watch pre-game coverage, other match-ups, or the game itself from their cars.

Sporting events aren’t the only places people tailgate.

Tailgating may have began at football games, but the trend is now expanding to include other stadium events. One of the biggest non-sports-related events people tailgate for is concerts. Some, like fans of musician Jimmy Buffet, have extremely elaborate and large tailgating parties before the concert begins.

The top five most-purchased items by tailgaters during football season (in order) cooler, grill, alcohol, furniture, and meat.

Tailgaters aren’t afraid to spend big when it comes to game day essentials. Most spend money on both food and equipment, hoping to make the most out of their tailgating experience.
